About me

Originally from Austria, I completed my bachelor and master degree (Diplom) at the Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany before I came to Southern California, where I received a PhD from the University of Southern California in the summer of 2017. I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology working with Claire Bucholz and Jennifer Jackson.

What's new?

JUNE 2019: Check out this article about a new  special themed issue on "Carbon Degassing Through Volcanoes and Active Tectonic Region" in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.

JUNE 2019: EOS News article about Ratschbacher et al. 2019 and the role of continental arcs in global carbonate dioxide emissions: read here

MAY 2019: New paper on magma addition rates in continental arcs just got accepted to be published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, have a look here: Spatial and depth-dependent variations in magma volume addition and addition rates to continental arcs: Application to global CO2 fluxes since 750 Ma.

NOVEMBER 2018: Stop by at my poster presentation at this year's AGU Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. on Monday, December 10th 8 am to 12:20 am. I will present about Variations in Fe3+/FeT ratios in volcanic amphibole as a function of magmatic oxygen fugacity and mineral composition. More information here: agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/prelim.cgi/Paper/398262

AUGUST 2018: New paper just got accepted to the Journal of Petrology on how to better interpret zircon crystallization ages in the context of magma batch emplacement in a shallow magma reservoir and the melt residence timescales: A new workflow to assess emplacement duration and melt residence time of compositionally diverse magmas emplaced in a sub-volcanic reservoir.

JULY 2018: Lots of interesting collaborative research will be presented at this year's Goldschmidt conference in Boston:
  • Ratschbacher et al.: Magma addition rates in continental arcs: A new calculation protocol and global implications - abstract
  • Delph et al.: A geochemical and seismic search for deep, active MASH zones - abstract
  • Werts et al.: Volcanic vs Plutonic Hornblende: Tools for discerning crystal accumulation and melt loss - abstract

FEBRUARY 2018: Collaborative work about a newly discovered Argentina shear zone will be presented at EGU 2018 meeting in Vienna this year: Ratschbacher et al.: Strain localization mechanisms (or lack thereof) in a ~ 10 km wide, syn- to post-magmatic mylonite zone in the Famatinian arc - Look at the poster here

DECEMBER 2017:  Brenhin Keller (Berkeley Geochronology Center), Kyle Samperton (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and myself will convene a session at the Goldschmidt conference 2018 in Boston on 03B: The Igneous Architecture of Arcs throughout the crustal column - see details here:  goldschmidt.info/2018/program/programViewThemes
